I have run into several games that were DIrectX 8.1 compatible, that I could never get to working properly. DirectX 9 and 10 and 11 seem to be very different animals than DirectX 8.1. If none of the compatibility modes fix the problem, undo what you have done here. But it should always show up for programs that were released back then. As I said, it can set up quite a challenge if you make the players or the ball invisible.
